Many of us develop a high sense of awareness in sobriety. The longer I abstain from drinking and using, the better my faculties become. After awhile, we begin to notice when our thinking becomes distorted. But if we wish to put a stop to negative thoughts, awareness is just the beginning. When “stinking thinking” takes hold of me, I must do more than just dismiss the negative thoughts. I must replace them with something positive or I am likely to slide right back into my negative thinking.
Depending on where I am at the time, I have choices about how to replace the old, negative tapes. Calling upon my higher power to guide me to the next appropriate action is always a good beginning. Next, I can call a friend in the program, or my sponsor. If I am driving, I can put in an AA speaker tape. I also have a list of good things about my life, and I repeat those like a mantra. The disease does not like anything positive!
Just for today, pay close attention to what we tell ourselves. If necessary, I can stop the dark thought mid-stream, start over, and replace the negative illusions with positive truths.Share post
