This disease has a ferocious appetite, and constantly has to be nourished. It draws much of its strength from our shortcomings and fears, but what feeds it the most are our secrets. Keeping things to ourselves exaggerates the worst of our defects; dishonesty, shame, lack of trust, guilt and isolation. Whatever we cannot talk about gives this disease more to work with. That is why there has to be at least one person with whom you share all your secrets. In this program, that person is your sponsor. Is there anything that you are not telling your sponsor? Even the smallest things, the shoe laces as my sponsor calls them, have the power to destroy peace of mind. Have you been entertaining thoughts about visiting dangerous places, or the impulse to use? Does it have something to do with money, or your sex life? Or is it something else? We need to starve this disease, and we do it by getting honest with our sponsors and revealing what we have kept hidden. Rigorous honesty is essential for our recovery. In sobriety, I made a decision to trust my sponsor enough to tell her all of my secrets. This is one important way for me to avoid relapse, and develop a relationship with my Higher Power. I ask for help to rise above my fear, ego and shame so I can be honest and recover.
